Titan Baseball Gets 4-2 Nonconference Win Over Monmouth

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team lodged a 4-2 nonconference victory over Monmouth College at Horenberger Field on Tuesday, May 3.

The Titans improved to 20-16 overall and the Fighting Scots fell to 18-17.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, IWU scored two runs in the third to stay ahead for good. Jacob Houghton was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, stole second and went to third on a throwing error. He came in to score on a single to leftfield by freshman John Bosco. When junior shortstop Jarrod Juskiewicz reached on a fielding error, Bosco advanced to third and he was knocked in on a long sacrifice fly to rightfield by senior Matthew Mardis.

Bosco had two of IWU's seven hits and Tim Smyk had the team's only extra base hit, a double that brought home a run in the sixth.

Sophomore starter Mike Plecki (2-1) got the win, allowing five hits and one run while striking out three in four innings as six Titan hurlers got in scheduled work. Brian Henry picked up his fourth save by working a 1-2-3 ninth inning with two strikeouts.
