BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- After pulling out a 6-5 victory in game one, the No. 13-ranked Illinois Wesleyan softball team ran away with a 10-0 five-inning victory in game two to earn a sweep over North Park at the IWU softball field on Saturday, April 2.
The Titans are now 11-3 overall and 2-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin and have won 11 straight games while the Vikings are 3-16 and 0-2 in the CCIW.
Game one saw North Park open the game up in the third inning with two runs before IWU would respond with a run of their own. Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the Titans scored two runs on a North Park error to take a 3-2 lead. North Park regained the lead in the fifth inning by scoring three runs, but the lead would be short-lived as the Titans scored three of their own. The Vikings put the game-tying run on first in the top of the seventh with two outs before a game-ending popout to shortstop.
Sophomore
Maggie Graham led IWU in game one by going 2-for-3 at the plate while scoring two runs. Senior
Sam Gudat added two hits and came around to score twice while four other Titans had a hit each.
Senior
Jenna Noland pitched the first three innings of the game, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out three. Junior
Alie Tarrant came on in relief, going 1 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on two hits before
Mackenzie Marquis came in and get the final seven outs while not allowing a run to pick up the victory.
Marquis (6-2) stayed in the circle for game two, pitching a complete-game five-hitter while striking out five.
The Titan bats came alive after being held scoreless in the first inning of game two, plating two in the second and fifth innings and scoring three runs apiece in both the third and fourth innings. Senior
Cassidy Tarpey recorded a hit in all three of her at-bats, knocking in three runs on a third-inning home run to right field while scoring three runs of her own. Freshman
Julie Josten picked up her only hit of the game in the fourth-inning, blasting a two-run home run to right field while
Laura Bonds was perfect at the plate going 2-for-2.
What's Next?The No. 13-ranked Titans close out the weekend with a non-conference doubleheader against Carroll University starting at 1 p.m. in Bloomington on Sunday. Carroll, who will join the CCIW starting next year, is 8-4 on the year.
