Softball Win Streak at 13 Following Sweep of Carroll

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The No. 13-ranked Illinois Wesleyan softball team won by scores 11-1 and 8-0 over Carroll University in a non-conference doubleheader at the IWU softball field in Bloomington on Sunday, April 3. 

IWU is now 13-3, having won 13 straight games while the Pioneers dropped to 8-6 overall. 

In game one, the Titans jumped on Carroll early by scoring four in the first inning before adding two in the third and five in the fourth. IWU would pound out 13 hits in the win, including six extra-base hits. Senior left fielder Mary Rankin was perfect at the plate, going 3-3 with a towering solo home run to right center field in the third. First baseman Cassidy Tarpey would also go 3-3 at the plate in game one while Julie Josten would hit two doubles. 

Jenna Noland (5-1) picked up the pitching victory, throwing four innings of three-hit baseball while allowing one run and striking out three. Freshman Taylor Marvin would come on in relief to pitch the final inning, striking out one and not allowing a hit. 

In game two, the Titans would score in every inning, plating two in the first, one in the second, third and fifth innings to go along with three in the fourth. the three-run fourth inning was capped off by a two-run home run to left field by senior shortstop Sam Gudat to make the score 6-0. Needing a single run to end the game via mercy rule in the fifth, Jillian Runyon would single home Katie Caulfield to end the game. 

Rankin would again go 3-3 in game two to finish the day 6-6, scoring twice while Danielle Smith would record a hit and drive in a run in her only at-bat of the game. 

Mackenzie Marquis improved to 7-2 on the season, throwing four innings of one hit softball, striking out three while facing only two batters over the minimum. Stephanie Prentice closed out the game, tossing one inning and giving up one hit.

What's Next? 
Illinois Wesleyan will try to play a rescheduled doubleheader at Monmouth College on Tuesday, April 5th starting at 3 p.m. The games were rescheduled from March 30 after inclimate weather postponed the games.
