Second Half Shutout Gives Men's Lacrosse 21-6 Victory

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa -- With the game tied at six early in the second quarter, the Illinois Wesleyan men's lacrosse team scored 15 straight goals while shutting down Cornell College in a 21-6 road victory on Tuesday, March 29 at Ash Park Stadium in Mt. Vernon, Iowa . 

IWU is now 6-3 overall while the host Rams fell to 2-6 on the season. 

A high-scoring first quarter saw Illinois Wesleyan take a 5-4 lead before Cornell scored two of the first three goals in the second quarter to knot the game at 6-6. The Titans would then close out the final six minutes of the half with three goals to take a 9-6 lead into intermission before erupting for eight third quarter goals. IWU tacked on four fourth quarter goals for good measure, running away with the victory. 

Junior Tim Smith picked up where he left off by scoring six goals to lead the Titans while sophomore James Maibuecher scored four goals and add four assists. Junior Michael Julius and sophomore Nick Winter each added three goals and junior Jacob Perry found the back of the net twice. 

Junior goalie Steven Laduzinsky improved to 6-3 in net this season, playing the first 51:39 of the game before making way for sophomore Mark Dezell to close out the final 8:21. The pair combined to make 17 saves on the night. 

Illinois Wesleyan outshot the Rams 50-38 and held a commanding 23-8 advantage in faceoffs. The Titans picked up 50 ground balls compared to 29 for Cornell while going 26-30 on clear attempts. Each team was guilty of 22 turnovers.

Game two of a four-game road swing takes place on Saturday, April 2nd as the Titans travel to University Heights, Ohio to take on John Carroll University at 12 p.m. ET.
