BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Appropriately enough on "Seniors' Night," it was senior
Dino Karas who scored the game-winning goal in the final minute of the first overtime to give Illinois Wesleyan a 2-1 win over North Central at Neis Field on Saturday, Oct. 29.
The win gives IWU an overall record of 9-7-1 and a 5-3 record in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, giving the Titans the No. 4 seed in the conference postseason tournament. The Titans will play at No. 1 seed and No. 11-nationally-ranked Carthage (16-3, 8-0 CCIW) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 2. The other semifinal will have Wheaton (7-7-3, 5-3 CCIW) playing at North Park (10-5-1, 6-1 CCIW) with the winning teams to meet on Saturday, Nov. 5 at the site of the highest remaining seed.
North Central (6-10-1, 3-5 CCIW) scored first in the match on a penalty kick goal from Chandler Olah at 50:36. But Illinois Wesleyan answered quickly with a goal at 52:49 on a header by
Collen Frost after a corner kick by Karas.
Karas's game-winner came at 99:29, unassisted after an initial save by North Central keeper Sebastian Garcia.
North Central outshot IWU, 13-10, and Garcia made three saves while IWU freshman
Alex Ruckstaetter made five.
Illinois Wesleyan will be making its first CCIW tournament appearance since 2012 and looking for its first advancement in the event. IWU has a tournament record of 0-2-2 with losses in 2003 and 2012 (both to Wheaton) and ties in 2007 (Elmhurst) and 2008 (Carthage).
