Maier's Overtime Goal Stuns Millikin

DECATUR, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan men's soccer team defeated Millikin University in double overtime on Wednesday, Oct. 19 by a final score of 3-2. Sophomore Mason Maier scored the game-winning goal in the 105th minute off an assist from freshman Josh Essary.
 
With a win the Titans improved to 7-6-1 overall and 3-2 in the CCIW while Millikin falls to 7-5-2 and 1-3 in the conference. IWU is currently tied for third place in the conference standings.
 
Millikin struck early on in this one as Ben Spelman scored off a penalty kick at the 11:28-mark in the first half. Neither team would score for the remainder of the half. IWU put pressure on the Big Blue keeper however taking seven shots and placing three on goal.
 
At the 74:49-mark freshman Doug Ballard got things going for the Titans, scoring a loose ball off a feed from freshman Patrick Hickey in front of the net for his fourth goal of the season. The Big Blue weren't down for long though, scoring in the 79th minute to take a 2-1 lead.
 
Sophomore Joey Delbert found the back of the net in the final minute of regulation scoring on a ball misplayed by the Millikin goalkeeper to tie the match up at two-all.
 
Neither team scored in the first overtime period despite Millikin putting two shots on goal. Maier went on to score the game-winning goal off a crossing pass in front of the net from Essary.
 
Sophomore Eddie Sanchez played the entire match in goal for the Titans making seven saves and improving his record to 4-3-1.
 
What's Next?
IWU next faces off against the Carthage College Red Men on Saturday, Oct. 22 in Kenosha, Wis. Kick-off is set for 7:00 against the No. 14-ranked Red Men.
