Titan Football Blasts Carroll, 62-10, in CCIW Game

WAUKESHA, Wis. -- The Illinois Wesleyan football team scored the most points in a game since the 1996 season in posting a 62-10 win over Carroll University at Schneider Stadium in Waukesha, Wis., on Saturday, Oct. 15.

Illinois Wesleyan improved to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while Carroll, returning to the conference for the first time since the 1991-92 season, is 0-6 this season and 0-4 in league play.

The Titans last scored more than 60 points in a 64-35 win at Wheaton on Oct. 26, 1996 and the 62 points Saturday is tied for seventh most in an IWU single game (IWU also scored 62 in shutout vs. Millikin in 1965).

"I was impressed with the way our team played," IWU head coach Norm Eash told WJBC Radio in a postgame interview. "We stressed preparation and execution coming into this week and I think everybody took care of business. We'll enjoy this for 24 hours and get about getting ready for next week to keep the momentum going."

Defense keyed the Titan win as Carroll was limited to 20 total rushing yards and 148 passing yards for a total of 168 yards in the game with only 10 in the second half. Junior linebacker Josh Akin had 10 total tackles (four solo) to pace IWU and he accounted for 1 1/2 quarterback sacks for -12 total yards) as the Titans made four sacks in the contest.
Other quarterback sacks came from senior linebacker Tyler Fahey (for -6 yards), senior linebacker Sean Garvey (-11 yards) and senior linebacker Luke Roth assisted on an Akin sack for -4 yards.

The Titans collected a total of 491 offensive yards with terrific balance - 246 rushing and 245 passing. Illinois Wesleyan had a 29-10 edge in first downs and held a commanding lead in time of possession with 37:17 compared to 22:43 for the Pioneers. IWU connected on seven of 11 third-down conversions and was two-for-two on fourth down.

Senior Maurice Shoemaker-Gilmore had 146 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries while making two catches for 11 yards and a TD.
Shoemaker-Gilmore moved up to No. 20 in an IWU single season with 744 rushing yards and is No. 13 all-time with 1,612 career rushing yards.

Freshman quarterback Brandon Bauer completed 84 percent of his passes (16 of 19) for 210 yards and four touchdowns. In addition to the 5-yarder to Shoemaker-Gilmore, Bauer's TD passes went to senior running back Austin Harrell (29 yards), senior wide receiver Austin Wagner (34 yards) and senior tight end Quincy Butler (6 yards).

Bauer's performance is the third best in an IWU game with a minimum of 10 pass attempts, behind the school-record of 87.1 percent by Lon Erickson (27-of-31 vs. Millikin; Oct 12, 1996) and the 84.6 percent by Jack Warner (22-of-26 vs. Millikin; Oct 10, 2015)

What's Next?
The Titans will play in Wisconsin again next Saturday, venturing to Kenosha to meet the Carthage Red Men in a 1 p.m. kickoff. Carthage improved to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the CCIW with a 37-28 win over Elmhurst on Oct. 15 ... Carthage has not won six games in a season since 2010.
