Early Thunder Goal Stands Up in Titan Women's Soccer Setback

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- A goal just 53 seconds into the match was all the scoring Wheaton College needed as the Thunder downed the Illinois Wesleyan women's soccer team, 1-0, at Neis Field in Bloomington, Ill., on Saturday, Oct. 15.

The Titans are now 7-5-2 overall and 3-1-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while the Thunder, winners of six of their last seven, improved to 7-7-0 overall and 4-1 in the CCIW.

An early foul by Illinois Wesleyan set-up the game's only scoring play. The IWU defense knocked away the initial free kick chance but Mary Pettit took a header off the save that gave Wheaton the lead just 53 seconds in.

Illinois Wesleyan outshot the Thunder 8-3 with a 5-1 edge in shots on goal. IWU sophomore Katie Denney was not forced to make a save in the game and Wheaton's Kathryn McGregor made five saves in recording her fifth shutout in the last six games.
