IWU Volleyball Takes Two Five-Set Thrillers

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan volleyball team was pushed to the limit in two five-set victories on Saturday, Sept. 12, in the Barker Chevrolet Classic I at the Shirk Center.

The Titans, now 5-2 overall, defeated Ohio Northern in the first match (15-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-23, 18-16) before downing No. 23 nationally ranked Coe College in their second five-set match of the day (25-23, 23-25, 18-25, 25-18, 15-7).

"I was very proud how hard the team fought this weekend," said Titan head coach Kim Nelson-Brown following IWU's second victory of the day to end the tournament 3-0. "We were either down in sets or way behind in points and we kept battling back.  This team has shown some great character this weekend and numerous players have stepped up at various times to help the team achieve success."

Sophomore Kyleigh Block and freshman Tyler Brown were selected to the all-tournament team.

In the win over Ohio Northern (5-3), Block led the Titans with 24 kills while also having 25 digs and one service ace. Brown had 17 kills and 15 defensive digs while junior Colleen Rynne tallied 29 set assists.

Brown would pick up where she left off in match one to pace the Titans with 19 kills in a five-set thriller over Coe while adding 17 digs. Freshman Rachel Burkman added 13 kills with two blocks with freshman Heidi Dague and sophomore Maisy Bowden contributing six kills each.
