NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team staved off elimination twice in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championships by beating host North Central 6-4 before avenging a loss to Carthage and downing the Red Men 5-1 to force a winner-take-all championship game Sunday, May 10 at Zimmerman Field.

IWU is 27-15 and a win away from their second consecutive CCIW postseason baseball tournament championship while the Red Men fell to 27-13.

The first game saw the Titans put up single runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings while scoring three runs in the third while giving up two runs to the Cardinals in both the second and sixth innings. Senior second baseman Derek Idstein and sophomore shortstop Jarrod Juskiewicz each drove in two runs for Illinois Wesleyan and junior outfielder Adam Glogovsky had three hits in four at-bats.

Senior pitcher Dan Truesdale (3-0) stepped away from his usual role as closer and threw a complete game, giving up four runs on nine hits and striking out five while allowing one walk.

After knocking out North Central, IWU beat Carthage 5-1 behind the arms of three Titan pitchers who combined to give up only one run. Sophomore Sean Coonan picked up the win by going 6 2/3 innings and giving up one run on eight hits. Xander Horwitz and sophomore Jonathan Vlk went the final 2 1/3 innings of one-hit ball.

The Titan offense scored one in the second and fifth innings before adding two in the sixth and an insurance run in the eighth while allowing a single run to Carthage in the seventh. Glogovsky again went three-for-four in the second game with one extra-base hit while freshman Mike Plecki drove in two of the five Titan runs in a two-for-three effort at the plate. Juskiewicz was the only other Titan with multiple hits (2).

What's Next?
IWU and Carthage will meet again at 1 p.m. at Zimmerman Field on Sunday with the winner claiming the CCIW postseason title and the league's automatic berth into the NCAA regional. The national selection committee is scheduled to release the playoff field early on Monday, May 11 at NCAA.com.

Illinois Wesleyan now has a career record of 44-46 in the CCIW tournament and is looking to win their seventh overall conference postseason tournament title. The Titans are looking to repeat last year's history of winning three games in two days after starting the conference tournament 1-1.
