NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- A six-run second inning and a six-run eighth were all Carthage College needed to send the Illinois Wesleyan baseball team to a 12-2 loss in the championship game of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament at Zimmerman Stadium in Naperville, Ill., on Sunday, May 10.
The Titans are 27-16 and will await the decision of the NCAA selection committee when the tournament field is announced on Monday morning at
NCAA.com. Carthage (28-13) earned the CCIW's automatic bid into the 56-team NCAA field with the win over the Titans.
Illinois Wesleyan scored both of its runs in the fourth inning as junior first baseman
Matthew Mardis led off with a single, followed by a single by shortstop
Jarrod Juskiewicz and a walk to junior centerfielder
Adam Glogovsky to load the bases with none out. Freshman third baseman
Gino Cavalieri reached on a fielder's choice as Mardis was forced at the plate but a throwing error by the catcher allowed Juskiewicz to score. advanced to second; Mardis, M. advanced to third. Glogovsky came home on a ground out to the first baseman by freshman
Mike Plecki.
The Red Men banged out 18 hits and IWU managed nine, including two each from senior second baseman
Derek Idstein, sophomore catcher
Pat Mollo, Mardis and Juskiewicz.
Sophomore
Louis Acklin was the losing hurler, working 1 1/3 innings and allowing four runs on five hits. On short rest, senior
Matt Hart went 5 1/3 innings and allowed two unearned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. Senior
John Munyon was touched up for five earned runs on six hits and two walks in 2/3 of an inning.
TITAN NOTES: Illinois Wesleyan now has a record of 44-47 in CCIW tournament competition ... Illinois Wesleyan has made five straight appearances in the NCAA Division III tournament ... IWU has made 12 overall national apperances, including nine in the last 11 years with a national championship in 2010 ... Illinois Wesleyan has a record of 24-24 in
NCAA tournament play and were 0-2 last year in McMinnville, Ore. ... This year's seniors would follow the last two years classes as the third class ever at IWU to have made the NCAA tournament in all of their college seasons.
