BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team split a pair of College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin games with Carthage on Sunday, April 16, winning game one 2-1 in 10 innings before falling 5-1 in the nightcap at Horenberger Field.
The Titans are now 12-6 in the CCIW and 22-11 overall while Carthage is now 11-7 in the league and 23-9 overall.
Game one was a terrific pitcher's duel between IWU senior
John Munyon and Carthage junior Jared Helmich. Munyon allowed one run on seven hits, no walks and 10 strikeouts over nine innings while Helmich gave up just one run on six hits, two walks and six strikeouts over eight innings.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the 10th, IWU got a one-out single from sophomore
Nick Huskisson, who went to second on a single by junior
Adam Glogovsky. Senior centerfielder
Tim Coonan singled to left, but Carthage's Jared Knoespel threw out Huskisson at the plate, with Glogovsky advancing to third. Senior
Derek Idstein then hit a sinking liner to shortstop Drew Bailey, who thought he had caught the ball on the fly but the umpires ruled it was trapped and Bailey's throw to first to get Idstein was late, allowing Glogovsky to score.
Huskisson, Glogovsky, Coonan and freshman third baseman
Gino Cavalieri each had two hits in a 10-hit Titan attack.
Dan Truesdale (2-0) got the win, allowing one hit and walking one in one inning.
In the nightcap, Carthage sophomore Tim Sulik (4-1) limited Illinois Wesleyan to one run on five hits, a walk and 10 strikeouts in a nine-inning, complete-game effort. Sophomore
Louis Acklin (0-4), the fifth of seven Titans hurlers, took the loss.
Glogovsky and junior first baseman
Matthew Mardis each had two hits and freshman designated hitter
Mike Plecki had IWU's only extra base hit with a ninth inning double.
