BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Trailing 7-3 with 4:42 left in the first half, the Illinois Wesleyan women's lacrosse team scored twice to end the half before outscoring the University of Dubuque 5-2 in the second half for a 10-9 win at Tucci Stadium on Saturday, April 25th.
In their first season of varisty competition, IWU finishes with a 7-9 record overall and 2-4 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while the Spartans closed out their season at 9-7 and 2-4 in conference play.
The Titans would trail 1-0 early on when freshmen
Abby Kushina and
Sophia Sodolski would score goals just over a minute apart to take a 2-1 lead with 21:03 left in the first half. Dubuque would score six of the next seven goals to take a 7-3 lead before IWU would close the half out with goals by Kushina and
Clarke Rich, with Rich's goal coming as time expired.
Ill. Wesleyan would score the first four goals of the second half with all four goals coming from different Titan players (
Lauren Pavich, Rich, Kushina,
Maggie Krause). The Spartans would tie the game with 4:20 left in the game before Sodolski would net her second goal of the game with 3:21 left in the game that turned out to be the game-winner.
Dubuque outshot the Titans 29-19 and held an 18-12 advantage in ground balls. IWU was successful on 11 of 14 clears but were guilty of 25 turnovers compared to 17 for the Spartans.
