Women's Soccer Doomed By Early Goal, Lose 1-0 in CCIW Final

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The No. 7-nationally ranked Illinois Wesleyan women's soccer team ceded a goal just 3:23 into the game, falling to Wheaton 1-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament final at Neis Field on Saturday, Nov. 7.

The Titans, who were looking for their first-ever CCIW regular season and conference tournament championship in the same year, fell to 18-2-0 overall while the Thunder improved to 15-6-0 as they won their 12th overall and fifth consecutive conference tournament title. With the win, Wheaton also earned the CCIW's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer tournament starting next week.

The lone goal of the game came off the foot of Ally Witt with assists going to Anna Saunders and Sydney Sharkey. IWU held Wheaton to just three shots total, outshooting the Thunder 12-3 including a 4-2 shots on goal advantage. Each team committed one offside penalty and Illinois Wesleyan held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Freshman Katie Denney played all 90 minutes in goal, making one save.

What's Next?
The Titans will have to await their fate to see if they are selected for an at-large berth into the NCAA Division III soccer tournament, with the selection showe being aired live on NCAA.com at 12 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9. The Titans will be looking to make the NCAA tournament for the seventh time in the last eight years, having advanced to all the way to the NCAA Division III National Semifinals last year.

NOTES: Illinois Wesleyan is 7-5-3 all time in the NCAA tournament, going 4-1 in last season's tournament while advancing all the way to the Final Four. Illinois Wesleyan last hosted an NCAA regional in 2013, defeating Transylvania 3-0 before tying Trinity (Texas), 1-1 and losing 5-4 on penalty kicks … IWU has tied a single-season school record with 18 wins, tying last season's squad … Senior Tess Bottorff is now tied with Amanda Kessel (2008-11) as the career leader at IWU in games played with 86 …
