KENOSHA, Wis. -- For the fourth time this season, the Illinois Wesleyan volleyball team upset a nationally-ranked squad, defeating No. 13-ranked Carthage in five sets at Tarble Arena on Friday, Oct. 24.
Improving to 6-2 this season in five-set matches, the Titans are now 19-7 overall and 4-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin with set scores of 25-21, 17-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-11. The Lady Reds fell to 23-7 and 3-2 in the CCIW.
Also in five sets, IWU topped Coe on Sept. 12 when the Kohawks were No. 23 in the national rankings, defeated Elmhurst on the road when they were ranked No. 16 nationally on Oct. 14 and knocked off the University of Chicago in five sets on Sept. 16 when the Maroons were ranked No. 13 in the nation.
Sophomore
Kyleigh Block provided a match-best 17 kills along with 14 digs, while freshman
Tyler Brown had 15 kills and 17 digs and freshman
Rachel Burkman made 13 kills. Block also had three total blocks and Burkman had two as freshman
Heidi Dague led the team with four blocks.
Freshman
Leah Seielstad had 27 set assists with junior
Colleen Rynne making 25 and senior
Mary Rankin paced the team with 24 defensive digs and two service aces.
Illinois Wesleyan had a .247 hitting percentage in the match, making 63 total kills in 174 attempts with 20 miscues while the Lady Reds had a .257 attack mark with 66 kills. 21 errors and 175 attempts.
NOTES: Illinois Wesleyan is No. 5 in the Oct. 22 NCAA Division III Midwest Regional rankings. Wis.-Whitewater is No. 1, followed by Carthage, Wis.-Oshkosh, Wis.-Eau Claire, IWU, Wis.-Stevens Point, Elmhurst and Chicago ... The win over Carthage is the 398th in the 20-year career of IWU head coach
