Titans Rebound With 77-68 Win at Wheaton

WHEATON, Ill. – Senior Jordan Nelson scored a team-high 20 points in 26 minutes to lead No. 22 Illinois Wesleyan to a 77-68 come-from-behind win at Wheaton on Wednesday, Jan. 7.

The Titans improved to 9-4 overall and 1-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, while Wheaton dropped its second straight CCIW contest, falling to 7-6 overall.

The Titans only led for 58 seconds of the first half, trailing by as many as nine at 35-26 with 2:51 left in the first half. IWU was held without a two-point basket for the first 10:08 of the game, but was able to shoot 7-12 (.583%) from beyond the arc to trail 41-36 at halftime. 

Wesleyan came out of the locker room scoring the first five points of the second half to knot the score up at 41 each. Wheaton was in the double-bonus for the final 10:38 of the game, but IWU was able to battle and take a 63-62 lead with 4:51 left in regulation. 

A Nelson 3-pointer with 2:02 left in the game broke a 64-64 tie to give IWU the lead for good as Wheaton would miss a three on their end before a Trevor Seibring layup to give the Titans a five point lead. The Thunder missed on their ensuing possession and Wesleyan hit free throws down the stretch to secure thier first CCIW win of the 2015 campaign. Senior Pat Sodemann and junior Ryan Coyle had 10 points each, while senior Dylan Overstreet had eight rebounds and four steals. 

IWU outrebounded Wheaton 30-28 and connected on 11-of-20 (.550) of their shots beyond the arc compared to only 1-of-16 (.063) for the Thunder.

IWU has now won five straight regular-season meetings against the Thunder dating back to 2011-12. The last time IWU was defeated by Wheaton in the regular season was on Jan. 28, 2012 when the Thunder topped the Titans 60-53 in Wheaton.
