BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Junior
Mike Marietti (shown at left) had 19 points and a career-high 10 rebounds as the No. 22-ranked Illinois Wesleyan men's basketball team disposed of a stubborn Carthage team by a 73-61 score on Saturday, Jan. 10 at the Shirk Center.
The Titans improved to 10-4 overall and 2-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, while the Red Men slipped to 5-8 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
The lead changed hands five times in the game and there were three ties, the last one coming at 29-29 with 2:43 before halftime. But the Titans, who trailed by five early in the game, outscored Carthage 7-2 to take a 36-31 halftime edge and led the remainder of the way. Carthage closed to within one at 50-49 with 10:04 left before IWU scored six straight points to right the ship and assume command.
IWU outrebounded Carthage 31-22 and IWU was guilty of 15 turnovers compared to 13 for Carthage.Â
