BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Illinois Wesleyan head coach Dennis Martel got his 700th career coaching victory as the Titans downed Knox College 9-2 at Horenberger Field on Tuesday, April 8.

The Titans improved to 13-8 overall this season while the Prairie Fire slipped to 10-8. In Martel's 27th season as head coach at IWU he has a record of 700-425-3 (.621 winning percentage). All-time he is the 25th NCAA Division III coach to reach 700 wins and, at the start of the season, only 11 active D-III coaches had attained that mark (see below). Martel has an active string of 14 straight years with 24 or more wins and his only losing season in 27 years of coaching was in 1999 (18-21).

Illinois Wesleyan broke open a 2-2 tie with four runs in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the last of the sixth. Shortstop Derek Idstein had four hits, including two on bunts, and Tim Coonan and Bobby Czarnowski each had two hits. Coonan had a double and Czarnowski had a triple with two runs batted in.

Jonathan Vlk, the first of five IWU hurlers, got the pitching win and is now 2-0. He went five innings and allowed two runs on three hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
