Baseball Splits Saturday Games at Wheaton

CAROL STREAM, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team split a pair of conference games at Wheaton on Saturday, April 5, winning the first game 9-8 before losing the nightcap 1-0 at Lee Pfund Stadium in Carol Stream, Ill.
 
The Titans are now 12-8 overall and 7-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while the Thunder is 14-8 overall and 4-4 in the league.

Game one was an offensive show as each team got 17 hits.
 
With a 2-0 lead in the second, IWU got five runs. Adam Glogovsky, Tim Coonan and Derek Idstein all singled with one out and Bobby Czarnowski singled to bring in Glogovsky and Coonan. Jon Frericks then singled to chase in Idstein and send Czarnowski to third and he scored to make it 6-0 on a sacrifice fly by Nick Hahn. Pat Mollo got the sicth single of the inning to bring in Frericks and stake IWU to a 7-0 lead.
 
Leading 7-6 in the eighth, Frericks added a two-run home run to give IWU a 9-6 lead. Wheaton scored two in the ninth to make it 9-8 and left the tying run on second base.

Junior starter Matt Hart (4-0) was the winning pitcher, going six innings and allowing six runs on 12 hits with three walks and nine strikeouts. John Munyon got his fourth save of the season, giving him eight in his career and tying him for fifth in IWU career records with Scott Schiller (2000-03).

Game two was the "Trey Martin Show" as he limited Illinois Wesleyan to two hits, a double and single by Hahn, while striking out 13 and walking two. The Thunder, who got only eight hits, scored the only run in the eighth off losing pitcher Dan Truesdale (1-2).

The Titans have a chance to deliver the 700th career coaching victory for Dennis Martel when they host Knox at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, in the Horenberger Field season opener.
