Titans Win CCIW Softball Title with Sweep of North Park

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The No. 12-ranked Illinois Wesleyan softball team, winners of 13 straight games, earned the school's 15th conference championship in the sport with a doubleheader sweep of North Park on Saturday, April 26, at IWU Field.

On "Seniors' Day", with wins of 1-0 in eight innings and 4-3 in the nightcap, the Titans are now 32-5 overall and 12-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, earning the regular season title and the opportunity to host the CCIW postseason tournament next Friday and Saturday.
North Park fell to 15-17 overall and 3-7 in the conference.

In the CCIW postseason tournament, No. 2-seed Augustana (29-9, 10-4 CCIW) will face No. 3-seed North Central (29-9, 9-5 CCIW) in the first game Friday (May 2) while No. 1-seed IWU will play No. 4-seed Carthage (21-11, 8-6 CCIW) in the second game. Game times will be announced later.

Other CCIW tournament championships for IWU in softball have come in 1991, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2012.

In the first game, IWU pitcher Molly McCready (18-2) picked up the win with 11 strikeouts and allowing only three hits.The 18 wins gives McCready 55 in her career (55-15), tied for second with Kelly Murray (55-18, 2001-04) in IWU career records and behind only Christy Engel with 62 (62-29, 2007-10). McCready's 588 career strikeouts is also in second behind the 600 from Engel.
 
Hannah Bowen scored the lone Titans' run (unearned) as she reached on a three-base error by the rightfielder and scored when senior Sara Daley also reached base on a Vikings' error.
 
In the second game, the Titans came from behind to secure the win in the sixth inning.
 
IWU opened the first with when Allie Riordan drove home Sara Rogers and the Titans led 2-1 in the third when Daley smacked a double to rightcenter to score sophomore centerfielder Kyley McKeown.
 
After North Park had gone ahead 3-2, IWU scored two in the top of the sixth to get the win. Senior Danielle Burge homered to left center field to lead off the inning and tie the game. With two outs, Amanda Fazzari, McKeown and Rogers had consecutive singles with Rogers' hit scoring Fazzari.
 
IWU pitcher Chloe Montgomery (4-0) earned the win, scattering five hits with three strikeouts, two walks and allowed no earned runs.

The Titans will return to the field tomorrow (Sunday, April 27) against DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. The first of two games begins at 1 p.m. ET.
