ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team rebounded from a 9-8 loss in 12 innings in the opener to earn a 5-1 win in the nightcap in a doubleheader split with Washington U. in St. Louis on Saturday, March 22.

Illinois Wesleyan is now 5-6 this season while the Bears are 7-9.

In the opener, the Titans had a 7-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth before the Bears scored two in the fifth and six in the seventh to get an 8-7 lead. IWU tied the game in the eighth and Washington U. scored in the bottom of the 12th.

IWU banged out 18 hits in game one as Jon Frericks had five hits and tied a school game record with seven at bats. Tim Coonan had three hits while Jack Troike, Jared Rubin and Derek Idstein each had two. Starting pitcher Jeff Johnson was rounghed up, allowing seven earned runs in 5 2/3 innings on nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Kyle Snedeker (0-1) took the loss as he pitched the last 2 1/3 innings and the 12th inning winning run came home on a wild pitch.

Senior Bobby Czarnowski had three of the nine IWu hits in game two with a triple and two runs batted in. Robert Romano (2-0) was the winning pitcher as he tossed 4 1/3 shutout innings, allowing three hits while walking two and fanning five. Freshman Sean Coonan picked up the save in working the final 2 2/3 innings and allowing one run on four hits with a walk and a strikeout.
