IWU Baseball Loses for First Time in 2014

CLINTON, Miss. - Mississippi College scored five runs in its final two at bats to hand Illinois Wesleyan baseball its first loss of the season, 8-5, at Frierson Field in Clinton, Miss., on Monday night, March 10.

The Titans are 3-1 this season and the Choctaws improved to 5-8.

IWU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Tim Coonan led off with a single and came home on a double from Bobby Czarnowski.

With the score tied at 1-1 in the top of the fifth, Derek Idstein led off with a walk and Coonan reached on a bunt single before senior outfielder Jon Frericks unloaded a three-run home run to rightfield to put IWU ahead 4-1.

The Choctaws scored two in the fifth and two in the seventh to take a 5-4 lead but IWU tied the game in the top of the eighth as Coonan led off with his third hit of the game and came around to score on an RBI single from Nick Hahn.

But Mississippi College scored three times in the eighth on two hits and four walks with an error and a wild pitch.

Frericks had two other hits with his homer and Czarnowski and designated hitter Pat Mollo each had two hits.

Senior lefthander Philip Kerber (0-1) took the pitching loss as four Titan hurlers allowed 11 hits with nine walks.

The Titans' spring trip continues with a 6 p.m. game on Tuesday, March 11, against Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss.
