MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The No. 8-ranked Illinois Wesleyan men's basketball team connected on 18 3-pointers, seven from junior
Bryce Dolan, in posting an 85-57 win over Austin College at the Rhodes Thankgiving Tournament in Memphis on Saturday, Nov. 29.
The Titans improve to 4-1 with their fourth straight win while the Kangaroos are 2-2 and have lost two in a row.
IWU set the school single-game record for 3-pointers attempted with 39, topping the mark of 35 at Olivet Nazarene on Dec. 15, 2001, and the 18 treys is one away from the school record of 19 set against Millikin (Feb. 20, 1993) and North Park (Feb. 19, 2014). Dolan's seven 3-pointers is one off the individual record of eight, shared by five players and most recently by Adam Dauksas at Elmhurst on Jan. 14, 2006.
IWU got off to another fast start, scoring the first 12 points in the game, and never trailed or were tied, leading by a 49-22 score at halftime and by as many as 34 at 70-36 with 12:55 to play in the game. The Titans outrebounded the Kangaroos, 46-35, and IWU handed out a total of 22 assists on their 31 baskets.
"Getting ahead early sure makes it easier to shoot the ball," IWU coach
Ron Rose told WJBC's Eric Stock in a postgame interview. "Austin was protecting the lane and the long-range shot is what they were giving us so we were able to take the 3-pointers. (Games like this) allow us to develop some depth and we continue to get better each time out."
