Women's Soccer Advances in NCAA with 2 OT Win

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan women's soccer team tied a school record for wins in a single season by defeating the University of Chicago 3-2 in two overtimes in the NCAA Division III tournament round of 16 at Stagg Field on Saturday, Nov. 22.

The Titans improve to 17-6-1 and advance for the first time ever to the final eight of the NCAA tourney to play Centre College at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Centre and Aurora played to a 1-1 tie and the Colonels advanced on penalty kicks, 5-4. It will be IWU's first match ever vs. Centre.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first overtime period, before Illinois Wesleyan senior Tess Bottorff would net the game-winner at the 104:55 mark to propel the Titans into their first Elite 8. 

IWU broke open the scoring in the 35th minute (34:38) with a goal by senior Brie Siebert, assisted by senior Julie Govedarica. The two would switch roles at the 42:51 mark when Govedarica would score off an assist by Siebert to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Chicago would cut the lead in half at the 63:34 mark to make it a 2-1 game, before scoring just over three minutes later to knot the score at two apiece.

IWU was outshot by the Maroons, 13-6, including an 8-3 defecit in shots on goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Dana Jourdan made six saves and picked up her 17th win of the season, tying Alli Novak of the 2010 Titan team for most wins by a goalkeeper in a single season. 

IWU IN THE NCAA: Illinois Wesleyan advanced to the Elite 8 for the first time in school history, and improved to 6-4-3 all time in the NCAA Tournament including a 5-4-2 NCAA Tournament record in games played away from Neis Field ... Chicago's season ends at 15-5-1 with two of those losses to IWU. The Titans won at Chicago, 1-0 on Sept. 25 ...
