WHEATON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan women's soccer team advanced to the final 16 of the NCAA Division III Soccer Tournament for the first time in school history with a 2-1 victory over Hope College on Saturday, Nov. 15 at Joe Bean Stadium in Wheaton, Ill.
With the win, the Titans improve to 16-6-1 while the Flying Dutch see their season come to an end with a 17-4-2 record.
The Titans got on the board in the 18th minute (17:52) with a goal by senior
Ashley Montijo off a free kick to take an early 1-0 lead. IWU would find the back of the net again in the second half at the 58:58 mark with sophomore forward
Skyler Tomko's team-leading 13th goal of the season, making the score 2-0 in favor of the Titans. Junior
Jenna Baker collected the assist on Tomko's goal.
The Flying Dutch would cut the lead in half to 2-1 at the 80:38 mark before the Titans would run out the clock to secure their first-ever trip victory in the sectional round of the NCAA Division III tournament.
Tomko's 13 goals this season is 11th most in IWU single-season history, while sophomore goalkeeper
Dana Jourdan picked up her 16th win of the season, second most in Titan single-season history. The Titans outshot the Flying Dutch 7-6 and had a 5-3 shots on goal differential.
IWU IN THE NCAA: Illinois Wesleyan advanced past the second round of the NCAA Division III Soccer Tournament for the first time in five tries, improving to to 5-4-3 overall in the NCAA Division III Tournament ... IWU will await other results from the NCAA Division III Tournament yet to be played this weekend, before finding out their next opponent as well as where the game will be played. Third round action will get underway on Friday, Nov. 21.
