BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Illinois Wesleyan won both its matches on Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Barker Chevrolet Classic II at the Shirk Center, downing both Lincoln Christian and Carthage in four sets to finish 3-1 in the tournament.
The Titans (now with a 9-6 overall record) beat Lincoln Christian University by scores of 25-19, 24-26, 25-13, 25-23 in the Saturday morning match, then defeated Carthage College, 25-19, 20-25, 25-23, 25-16, on Saturday afternoon.
"In our first match today, we played very slow and lacked intensity, but we were able to pull out a win," IWU head coach
Kim Nelson-Brown said. "Against Carthage, the team played with energy, excitment, and some passion. It was very nice to see us finish the weekend with a great win!"
In the match against Carthage, freshman
Loryn Bruer set a school record with 38 defensive digs. The previous record for digs was 37 (also in four sets) by Jaclyn Verticchio against Wis.-Lacrosse on Sept. 30, 2006.
The win over Carthage does not count in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin as the league match will be played on October 8 in Kenosha, Wis.
