CHICAGO, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan softball team pulled off a doubleheader sweep by scores of 6-2 and 8-1 against North Park on Saturday (April 20) afternoon in Chicago, Ill.
IWU is now 24-7 overall and moved into second place with a 5-3 record in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, while the Vikings are 17-9 and 3-7 in the league.
Game One
On a cool and sunny afternoon, the Titans came from behind to beat the Vikings, 6-2, with three runs scored and three hits coming from senior shortstop
Courtney Martin.
♦ The Titans started out strong, scoring one in the first inning as Martin came home on a single by senior third baseman
Emma Clark, who had two RBI in the game.
♦ In the fourth, North Park put two runs on the board off a double and balk to take a 2-1 lead.
♦ IWU responded in the fifth, putting two of its own across the plate. Martin scored on a double from senior centerfielder
Keri Leach, who had three RBI in the contest. Leach then scored when Clark singled to left field, putting Titans ahead, 3-2.
♦ The Titans sealed the deal in the sixth inning when junior
Jessica Toth sciored on a Martin single and Martin and freshman
Cassidy Tarpey came in on another Leach hit.
♦ IWU junior pitcher
Molly McCready (11-3) struck out 14 and scattered three hits with five walks to earn the pitching win, while the Vikings' Casey Latal (7-5) came up with the loss.
Game Two
IWU already led 4-1 when a big four-run fifth inning wrapped up the sweep with an 8-1 win.
♦ The Vikings opened the game with one run in the first but the Titans responded with one in the first inning when sophomore leftfielder
Audra James crossed the plate after Clark hit a double to left field. Clark finished the game with three hits and four runs batted in.
♦ In the four-run fifth, James scored on a Clark single, Clark came home on a hit by sophomore
Chloe Montgomery, senior
Katie Bruins ran in when junior
Erin Sweeney grounded out, and Toth scored on an infield single by
Sara Rogers.
♦ Senior lefty
Alyssa Vorel improved to 8-2 as she struck out four and allowed three hits in six innings. Danielle Warner was the losing hurler.
What's Next?
The Titans travel to Kenosha, Wis., for a doubleheader against league-leading Carthage (21-5, 8-0) on Sunday (April 21). The first game is scheduled to begin at noon.
