Titan Baseball Loses CCIW Pair to Augustana

MOLINE, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team suffered its first two College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin losses at Augustana on Saturday (April 20), falling by scores of 10-5 and 4-3 (in 10 innings) in Moline, Ill.

The Titans, ranked No. 16 in the latest ABCA poll and No. 21 in this week's D3baseball.com rankings, slip to 22-7 overall and 12-2 in the CCIW while Augustana improved to 23-5 overall and 10-3 in the league. Augie is No. 27 in the ABCA poll and No. 22 in the D3baseball.com poll.

Game One
♦ The Titans led 3-0 in the third after scoring two in the first and one in the third. With two outs in the second, Nick Hahn singled, senior Anthony Lopez walked and senior Zach Scott singled to score Hahn.
Senior shortstop Matt Workman had an infield single to score Lopez. In the third, senior first baseman Kevin Callahan ripped a one-out double to leftfield and came home on a single by junior Jon Frericks.

♦ The Vikings scored four in the third, two in the fourth and four more in the fifth to claim a 10-4 lead.

♦ IWU threatened in the eighth, getting the bases loaded with none out before junior pinch-hitter Bobby Czarnowski and Callahan struck out and senior catcher A.J. Nathan flied out to the first baseman.

♦ Titan starter Matt Hart (3-2) allowed nine runs on 10 hits with a walk in 4 2/3 innings. Dan Truesdale worked the final 3 1/3 innings and allowed one run on three hits.

Game Two
♦ Augustana scored the unearned winning run in the 10th inning with one out on a wild pitch and an error.

♦ The Titans put up two in the second to go ahead 2-0. With two outs and Lopez on first by way of a fielder's choice, Scott singled and Workman brought Lopez home with a single to right. Scott then scored on a wild pitch.

♦ IWU surrendered two in the third and one in the fourth to leave Augustana with a 3-2 lead. The Titans tied the game in the eighth as Callahan was hit by a pitch and went to third on a Hahn single. Frericks reached on a fielder's choice that saw Callahan out at home. A Derek Idstein single to rightfield plated Hahn for the tying run.

♦ Junior starter Jeff Johnson pitched eight innings and allowed three runs on nine hits while striking out six and walking two. Sophomore John Munyon (5-2) took the loss, going 1 1/3 innings with one strikeout and a hit.

What's Next?
Illinois Wesleyan and Augustana will square off at Horenberger Field at 1 p.m. on Sunday (April 21) as the Titans look to salvage a game in the CCIW series.
