Titan Baseball Sweeps Millikin in Home Opener, 5-0 in CCIW

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team swept the Millikin Big Blue in the Titans' home opener by scores of 7-0 and 5-1 on Tuesday (April 2) at Jack Horenberger Field in Bloomington, Ill. The double victories put IWU at 5-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.
 
The Titans are 12-4 overall, while Millikin drops to 6-8 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
 
Game One
IWU sophomore John Munyon pitched a shutout and scattered seven hits to help the Titans to the 7-0 victory over the Big Blue in the first game.

♦   IWU and Millikin were even until the fourth inning when the Titans put four runs on the scoreboard. Nick Hahn scored after senior second baseman Anthony Lopez was walked with the bases loaded. An at-bat later, junior Jon Frericks and senior Kevin Callahan each scored on an error by the second baseman. Senior Matt Workman then singled to right center, running Lopez in, 4-0.
♦   The Titans got on the board again in the bottom of the eighth when Callahan singled through the right field line to knock in senior catcher A.J. Nathan. Lopez had a two-RBI single to right center, scoring Frericks and Callahan to help IWU to the 7-0 lead.
♦   Munyon (3-1) struck out nine and was credited with the win and Big Blue pitcher Logan Bolton (2-1) suffered the loss.

Game Two
The Titans picked up where they left off in the second game of the doubleheader, defeating Millikin, 5-1.

♦   Callahan singled up the middle in the first inning for a pair of runs batted in, scoring both Erickson and sophomore Tim Coonan. Also in the first, Frericks hit a sacrifice fly to score Hahn, bumping IWU ahead 3-0.
♦   Millikin scored for the first time of the day in the fourth when Joe Palazzolo crossed the plate after a fly out, putting the score at 3-1.
♦   In the fifth, Callahan again had an RBI single to score Hahn, 4-1.
♦   An inning later, Workman scored off an Erickson RBI single up the middle to put the Titans ahead, 5-1.
♦   IWU freshman starting pitcher Keenan Kelly (1-0) earned the win, while Millikin pitcher Sean Beal (0-2) had the loss.
 
What's Next?
The Titans, now ranked No. 29 in the American Baseball Coaches Association poll, will host Beloit College Thursday (April 4) for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
