IWU Baseball Outplays Bluejays in Sweep

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team swept Elmhurst in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon (April 13) at Butterfield Park, 10-6 and 8-1, to remain undefeated in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.
 
The Titans are 11-0 in the CCIW and 20-5 overall, while the Bluejays are 4-5 in the CCIW and 12-10 overall.
 
Game One
The Titans got 15 hits in game one to post a 10-6 win over the Bluejays, 10-6.
♦  Senior shortstop Matt Workman put the Titans ahead, 1-0, when he scored in the third inning off a double from junior centerfielder Jon Frericks, who had three hits in the game.
♦   IWU put three more on the board, 4-0, in the seventh with the big blow being a two-run home run coming from senior first baseman Kevin Callahan to score Frericks.
♦   The Titans added two more in the eighth when junior designated hitter Bobby Czarnowski, who also had three hits in the win, smacked a home run to score Nick Hahn.
♦   Elmhurst cut into the 6-0 deficit with four runs on four hits and two errors in the eighth but IWU responded with four runs of its own in the ninth as Hahn doubled home a run and senior Zach Scott provided a bases-loaded double that cleared the bases.
♦   IWU pitcher Matt Hart (3-1) earned the win, going 8 1/3 innings and striking out six while allowing seven hits. Elmhurst's Jordan Hanlon (1-2) came up with the loss.
 
Game Two
♦   The Titans snapped a 1-1 tie in the third when sophomore Tim Coonan, who had a four-hit and three-RBI game, scored on a groundout by Callahan, who had two RBI in the game.
♦   In the fourth, IWU put two on the board to get a 4-1 lead when Czarnowski and Hahn both crossed the plate when Coonan singled to center field.
♦   In the eighth, the Titans tacked on four runs with two coming home on a single by senior catcher A.J. Nathan.
♦   IWU pitcher Jeff Johnson (5-0) struck out 11 and walked only one in eight innings in getting the pitching win, while the Bluejays' Jeff Guzzi (0-1) suffered the loss.
 
What's Next?
The Titans will return to the diamond at Jack Horenberger Field on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University tomorrow (Sunday, April 14) when they host Elmhurst at 1 p.m.
