Titan Baseball Loses 5-4 Decision in 10 Innings

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The No. 17-ranked Illinois Wesleyan baseball team allowed a run in the ninth to tie the game and a run in the 10th inning was the game-winner in a 5-4 loss at Washington U. in St. Louis on Friday (March 22).

Illinois Wesleyan is 6-3 this season and Washington U. is 10-6.

♦  The Titans scored two in the first when sophomore rightfielder Tim Coonan led off the game with a walk, went to third on a double to centerfield by junior Jon Frericks, and both players got knocked home by a Kevin Callahan single to right field.

♦  IWU added two more in the fourth as senior shortstop Matt Workman singled to left center and went to third on a double to left center by Coonan. Frericks hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Workman and Coonan went to third and scored an unearned run on a throwing error by the centerfielder.

♦  Senior lefthander Nick Mehn (1-1) took the loss on the mound as he went 4 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Matt Hart started the game and went 5 innings, allowing three runs with five strikeouts.

♦  Coonan, Workman and Nathan each had two hits for IWU.

What's Next?
The Titans stay in St. Louis for a pair of games Saturday, facing St. Norbert at 10 a.m. and meeting Washington U. again at 3 p.m.
