IWU Baseball Holds Off Bucs in 7-6 Road Victory

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team came out of the gates swinging against Christian Brothers University Thursday afternoon, but despite a late-effort by the Bucs to overcome the Titans, IWU picked up the 7-6 victory at Buc Field.
 
The Titans improve to 4-2 overall in the season.
 
♦ IWU jumped ahead early, scoring three runs in the first inning. A.J. Nathan singled to left field, helping Kevin Callahan advance to second, scoring Jon Frericks and Matt Workman. Callahan scored off a wild pitch, two at bats later, to put IWU ahead, 3-0.

♦ The scoreboard remained untouched until the top of the sixth inning, when Bobby Czarnowski scored off a Bucs error to put the Titans up, 4-0.

♦ The Bucs also scored in the sixth thanks to a single by Josh Hopkins to run in Jarrett Jenkins and Tanner Sandel to bring the score to 4-2. Josh Hopkins and Braden Keathley also scored in the sixth to tie up the score, 4-4.

♦ The ninth was a busy inning, as both teams scored a combined seven runs.

♦ IWU's Johnathan Erickson, Czarnowski, and Adam Seifert each scored for the Titans to put them ahead, 7-4.

♦ In CBU's last at bat, the Bucs came within one, 7-6, of tying up the game as Taylor Seaman and Will Wilson each scored.

♦ IWU senior pitcher Anthony Kopp picked up the win by pitching in the eighth inning in relief of senior lefthanded starter Nick Mehn, who struck out seven in 7 2/3 innings. Junior John Frueh earned the save.
 
What's Next?
The Titans will face Wisconsin-Whitewater for a single game at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Shaw Park in St. Louis, Mo., followed by a single game at Fontbonne.
