IWU Men Clobber Carthage to Claim Conference Crown

KENOSHA, Wis. - The No. 9-ranked Illinois Wesleyan men's basketball team is the outright 2013 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin champion after a 78-59 win over Carthage on Saturday (Feb. 9) at Tarbel Arena in Kenosha, Wis.

♦  Illinois Wesleyan is 20-3 overall and 12-0 in the league, winning the CCIW title for the first time since 2005. It is the school's 28th league title and 22nd men's hoops championship won outright. Carthage slipped to 11-12 overall and 6-6 in the CCIW.

♦ The Titans led 37-33 at the half and extended their advantage to as many as 25 late in the second half (78-53 with 1:19 left). IWU held a commanding 42-16 rebounding lead. The Red Men committed only eight turnovers while IWU admitted to 15.

♦ Senior Kevin Reed was 10-for-10 from the field to tie a school field goal percentage record of 1.000 percent, most recently set by Ryan Connolly (10-for-10, Jan. 12, 2011 vs. Millikin) and Zach Freeman (11-for-11, Nov. 25, 2006 vs. Judson).

♦ The win also means that Illinois Wesleyan will serve as host for the CCIW postseason tournament on Feb. 22-23 for the first time since the men's tourney was started in 2006. It has been at Augustana three times (2006, 2007, 2008), at North Central twice (2011, 2012), and at Wheaton (2009) and Carthage (2010) once.

Who's Next?
All teams in the CCIW get a week off and Illinois Wesleyan plays next at home against Millikin at 7 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 16). The Titans will be celebrating “Seniors' Night”, honoring Kevin Reed and Dan Oswald.
