BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan women's soccer team won its first-round match in the NCAA Division III national tournament, taking a 3-0 decision over Transylvania at IWU's Neis Field on Saturday, Nov. 16.
The Titans, now 13-2-5 this season, will face No. 2-ranked Trinity (Texas) in a 5 p.m. showdown at Neis Field on Sunday, Nov. 17. Trinity (22-0-1) was a 3-1 winner over Augustana (Ill.) in the earlier match at Neis Field.
Transylvania's season ends with a 14-5-2 record.
The Titans scored early as freshman
Sydney Fox scored an unassisted blast past Transylvania keeper Jerrica Scovell from the top of the box at the 4:03 mark for her fifth goal of the year.
Senior
Tillie Bill made the score 2-0 at 34:55 on an unassisted goal, tapped in after a blocked save by the keeper.
Bill added her second goal of the game (and 10th of the season) on a wide open shot at 72:37 with assists from
Emily Johnson and senior
Kristina Dolak to provide the final 3-0 margin.
Illinois Wesleyan outshot the Pioneers, 19-2, and fired 10 shots on goal to one for Transylvania. IWU senior keeper
Zoie Samaan turned in the shutout, her sixth of the season, with one save while Scovell made seven saves.
IWU IN THE NCAA: Illinois Wesleyan now has a 3-4-2 record in six overall NCAA Division III tournament appearances. IWU's last NCAA win was in 2010 (3-0 over Washington & Jefferson).
