Kyle Gorgol scored three goals, including the game-winner on a penalty kick with just over three minutes to play, to give the Illinois Wesleyan men's soccer team a 3-2 win over Dubuque at Neis Field on Friday (Aug. 31).
IWU wins its season opener in the "Clash of the Titans" Tournament.
Gorgol scored his first goal, unassisted, at the 11:25 mark and the Titans claimed a 2-0 lead at 18:07 when Gorgol scored on a header off a free kick assist from senior
Danny Kenny.
Dubuque's Nick McDonald scored the first of his two goals at 31:46 and then tallied again in the second half at 49:00 as he dribbled past the defense for a goal.
Gorgol's winner came at 86:26.
Senior
Tim Hegwood got the win in goal as he made seven saves. The Titans had 23 shots to 13 for the Spartans and IWU put 11 shots on goal to nine for Dubuque.
The Titans will face Calvin at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at Neis Field. Calvin was a 4-1 winner over Augustana on Friday.
