BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team won a game and lost a game at North Park in the final round of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament on Saturday (May 12).
In the first game, sophomore centerfielder
Jon Frericks and sophomore first baseman
Bobby Czarnowski each had home runs and the Titans had 15 hits in an 11-5 win but the Titan hurlers surrendered 14 hits in losing game two 8-4.
The Vikings improved to 31-12 and received the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III tournament. The Titans are 29-15 and will await word Monday (May 14) on the pairings for the national tournament at
NCAA.com.
In game one, Illinois Wesleyan got three in the second, two in the third and tacked on sixth in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Frericks, junior third baseman
Kevin Callahan and senior leftfielder
Mark McDermott each had three hits while Czarnowski had four RBI and Frericks had three.
Sophomore
John Frueh got the win in relief as he pitched the final 3 2/3 innings and allowed one run on six hits. Junior
Anthony Kopp was the starter and allowed three runs on nine hits in the first four innings.
In the second game the Titans managed only six hits with two from junior shortstop
Zach Scott. Czarnowski provided a two-run home run in the eighth to get Illinois Wesleyan within two.
Junior lefthanded starter
Nick Mehn was the losing pitcher, allowing five runs on seven hits and four walks in 4 2/3 innings. The Vikings collected 14 hits and left six on base.
