CHICAGO, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team opened play in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament with a 9-5 win over Elmhurst on Thursday (May 10) at North Park.

The Titans improved to 27-13 while the Bluejays slipped to 22-19.
IWU will play North Park at 1 p.m. on Friday. In a showdown of Vikings, North Park defeated Augustana, 4-3 in the other Thursday game.

Senior Joe Sweeney (7-2) was the winning pitcher, going six innings and allowing five runs on 10 hits while striking out none. Freshman Matt Hart threw the final three scoreless innings, striking out five.

Illinois Wesleyan scored eight runs in the third inning. Senior leftfielder Mark McDermott singled to center field and advanced to second on a passed ball. With one out, junior Kevin Callahan singled to right field to move McDermott to third. Sophomore Bobby Czarnowski walked to lead the bases ahead of a single by sophomore designated hitter Johnathan Erickson that scored McDermott.
Junior Anthony Lopez singled to centerfield to score Callahan.
Senior rightfielder Kevin Sullivan reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Czarnowski to score. After Sullivan stole second, sophomore centerfielder Jon Frericks walked to load the bases and junior Zach Scott walked to bring in Erickson. Batting for the second time, reached on an error by the centerfielder that scored Frericks and Sullivan. Nathan was hit by a pitch and Callahan doubled to left field to score McDermott and Scott.

Callahan and McDermott each had three hits to lead a 12-hit IWU attack.
