DECATUR, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team won a doubleheader at Millikin by scores of 11-1 and 8-2 on Tuesday (April 3).
The Titans improved to 14-5 overall and are 4-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while Millikin slipped to 4-16 overall and 0-5 in CCIW play as they have been outscored 58-6 in five league games.
In game one, the Titans jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Junior shortstop Zach Scot reached on an error and, with one out, sophomore centerfielder
Jon Frericks doubled to bring home Scott. Frericks scored on a single by sophomore designated hitter
Johnathan Erickson. After junior first baseman
Kevin Callahan doubled, Erickson scored on a wild pitch. Junior catcher
A.J. Nathan's single brought home Callahan for the final run of the frame.
IWU put up five more in the fourth. Junior second baseman
Matt Workman doubled and, with one out, senior leftfielder
Mark McDermott was hit by a pitch to get runners at first and second. With two outs, Erickson singled home Workman and Callahan provided two RBI with a double. Nathan smacked a home run for two more runs.
Senior righthander
Joe Sweeney (4-1) was the winning pitcher, going five innings and allowing two hits while striking out two and walking two.
Erickson, Callahan and Nathan all had three hits while Workman had two of IWU's 14.
Freshman starter
Robert Romano was the winning pitcher in game two, tossing six innings and allowing five hits while striking out four and surrendering two earned runs.
The Titans held a 5-2 lead in the nightcap before putting the game away with three eighth inning tallies. Nathan led off by being hit by pitch and stole second. After moving to third on a sacrifice bunt, Nathan scored o a groundout by junior third baseman
Anthony Lopez. With two outs, Workman and Scott got singles and both players scored on a double by McDermott.
The next Illinois Wesleyan action will be at 5 p.m. on Friday (April 6) with a single game against North Central (13-5 overal; and 4-1 in the league).
