Joe Sweeney pitched a complete game five-hitter and junior
Anthony Lopez drove in a pair of runs in the Illinois Wesleyan 3-1 win over Augustana at Swanson/Brunner Field in Moline on Friday (April 27).
The frourth straight win boosts the Titans' record to 23-10 overall and 10-6 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while Augustana is 22-12 overall and 8-8 in the CCIW.
The same two teams are slated to battle in a doubleheader at Horenberger Field at 1 p.m. on Saturday (April 28).
Sweeney struck out five and walked none in the complete game as he improved to 6-2.
IWU scored a run in the second to go up 1-0 when sophomore
Johnathan Erickson singled to center field and went to third on a double to right center by sophomore first baseman
Bobby Czarnowski. Senior leftfielder
Mark McDermott got the run home with a ground out to the shortstop.
The Titans got the go-ahead run in the seventh as Czarnowski singled to right field to lead off the inning, went to second on a bunt by McDermott, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a strikeout, Lopez singled to left center to knock in Czarnowski.
IWU tacked on an insurance run with two outs and nobody aboard in the ninth. Senior rightfielder
Kevin Sullivan doubled down the leftfield line and Lopez followed with another single to plate Sullivan.
With two each, Lopez, Czarnowski and Sullivan accounted for six of the seven IWU hits.
