BELOIT, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team got two runs in the ninth inning, including a
Kevin Callahan home run, to get a 6-4 win and then took the second game 11-6 in sweeping Beloit on Wednesday (March 28).
The Titans improved to 10-4 while Beloit slipped to 4-10.
In game one, centerfielder
Jon Frericks, sophomore third baseman
Johnathan Erickson and sophomore rightfielder
Bobby Czarnowski each had two hits as the Titans scored three times in the fifth, once in the sixth and got the two for the game winners in the ninth.
Freshman righthander
Robert Romano pitched six strong innings, allowing six hits and only one earned run while striking out nine. Junior
Anthony Kopp (2-0) got the win in relief, going three innings and allowing one hit with two walks and two strikeouts.
In the second game, Czarnowski had four hits to pace an 18-hit IWU attack in the seven-inning game. Senior leftfielder
Mark McDermott and Callahan each had three hits while senior designated hitter
Kevin Sullivan and junior second baseman
Matt Workman each had two.
Junior lefty
Nick Mehn lasted only 2/3 of an inning, allowing three runs on four hits with a walk. Sophomore righthander
Jeff Johnson pitched two innings to pick up the win and relievers
Dan Truesdale,
Pat Hayn and
John Munyon allowed no earned runs on two hits in their four innings combined.
Illinois Wesleyan opens its College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin season with a single game at Wheaton on Friday (March 30) at 5 p.m. and will host the Thunder in a doubleheader on Saturday (March 31) at 1 p.m.
