BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Illinois Wesleyan scored the first 14 points of the game and went on to a 75-53 win over Loras at the IWU Tip-Off Tournament in the Shirk Center on Saturday (Nov. 17).
The Titans improved to 2-0 while the Duhawks fell to 1-1. IWU takes on Illinois College at 7:30 p.m. at home on Tuesday (Nov. 20).
Illinois Wesleyan held a 23-point halftime lead at 44-21and built the lead to 25 points with the first basket in the second period. The Duhawks managed to get within 11 points on four occasions in the final 4:33 of the game but could never get within single digits.
IWU was led by the 18 points from junior
Michael Mayberger while sophomore
Dylan Overstreet had 13 and
Victor Davis scored 11. Senior
Kevin Reed contributed 10 points and gathered eight rebounds while junior
Andrew Ziemnik also had eight boards.
The Titans were 26 of 55 from the field (47.3 percent) and made only 13 of 22 free throws (59.1). IWU was 10 of 18 (55.6) from the 3-point area. Illinois Wesleyan held a 38-31 advantage on the boards and committed 15 turnovers compared to 14 for the Duhawks.
Luke Barry led Loras with 14 points while Bobby Harmening and Nathaniel Smith each scored 11. Loras shot 41.1 percent from the floor (23 of 56) and made 5 of 16 3-pointers (31.3). The Duhawks made 12 of the 13 free throws they attempted.
