BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan volleyball team improved to 12-9 this season in picking up two 3-0 wins on Friday (Oct. 5) on day one of the Barker Classic II at the Shirk Center.
The Titans handled Robert Morris College-Peoria by scores of 25-5, 25-13, 25-10, then took care of Culver-Stockton College (Mo.), 25-20, 25-19, 25-20.
"Yesterday we were really focusing on our defense and the team did a great job applying our changes into both matches tonight," said IWU head coach
Kim Nelson-Brown.
Against Robert Morris (who slipped to 1-18), sophomore
Cydnee Mann led IWU with nine kills and four blocks while senior
Alex Hill and senior
Katie Rhoades each had seven kills as the Titans hit .440 in the match (43 kills in 84 total attempts). Hill also had four blocks.
Junior setter
Erin Wachtel had 31 assists and 12 digs and senior libero
Stephanie Polich led the team with 15 digs.
Culver-Stockton fell to 10-12 and had a three-gamre winning streak snapped. In the win for IWU, Hill had a team-high 10 kills and four blocks. Sophomores
Maddie Greybar and
Kinzie Schweigert had nine and seven kills, respectively, while Wachtel had 34 set assists and six blocks and Polich made 11 digs.
Illinois Wesleyan will host Lincoln Christian at 12 p.m. on Saturday to wrap up tourney play.
