IWU Men's Soccer Nabs Ninth Win, First Time Since 2003

DECATUR, Ill. - For the first time since 2003, the Illinois Wesleyan men's soccer team has earned its ninth win in a season, defeating Millikin, 4-1, in Decatur, Ill., Wednesday (Oct. 3).

The Titans (9-1, 2-0) have nine wins in a season for the first time in nine seasons, and only five previous Illinois Wesleyan men's soccer teams have had nine or more wins in a season. 
The school record is 12 (1995, 12-6-0), followed by 10 wins (1998, 10-6-2), and three with nine (2003, 9-10-0; 2000, 9-9-1; 1994, 9-8-0).

IWU is now also undefeated in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play with two victories.

IWU's Danny Kenny started out with a bang, scoring a goal just over five minutes into the game, assisted by Matt LaLonde. LaLonde then hit the ball into the net at the 7:13 marker to put the Titans up, 2-0.

Illinois Wesleyan striked again when Frank Marchiori scored a goal, assisted by Kyle Gorgol, 49:51 into the game, putting IWU ahead 3-0.

Not to be shut out, Millikin (3-8, 0-2) responded with a goal from Ryan Schneider with 66:53 on the clock, putting the score at 3-1, Titan lead.


With 80:20 left, Tim Griffin hit one in, scoring the last goal of the game and securing the 4-1 Titan victory.

IWU goalies Andrew Reed and Tim Hegwood split the 90-minute game, each racking up two saves. Big Blue keeper Daniel Sinclair had eight saves.

The Titans will resume action Saturday (Oct. 6) against Elmhurst in Elmhurst, Ill., at 5 p.m.
