ELMHURST, Ill. - Freshman
Parker Musselman came off the bench to score 13 points and grab 5 rebounds (both career bests) to help the Illinois Wesleyan men's basketball team win a 77-60 league game at Elmhurst College on Saturday (Jan. 21).
The Titans bounced back from Tuesday's loss to improve to 14-3 overall and 5-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while the Bluejays slipped to 9-8 overall and 3-3 in the league. North Central and Wheaton were also winners on Saturday and join the Titans at the top of the conference standings at 5-1.
IWU struggled early as the Bluejays jumped out to a 17-8 lead with 9:07 left in the half but IWU rallied to tie the game at 17-17 with 6:44 to play before the break. During the final stretch the Titans outscored the Jays 17-6 to take a 34-23 lead into the locker room.
Jordan Zimmer led IWU with 18 points while sophomore
Andrew Ziemnik added 13 and sophomore
Victor Davis helped with 12.
“I thought we had good production from both our starters and our bench players,” IWU head coach
Ron Rose told WJBC radio in a postgame interview. “Our depth played a role with guys like
Stephen Rudnicki, Ziemnik and Musselman making a big difference tonight.”
Illinois Wesleyan made 27 of 49 from the field (55 percent) and connected on eight of 17 3-point field goal attempts (47 percent) while making 15 of 20 free throws (75 percent).
Elmhurst shot 38 percent (19 of 50) from the field and made 6 of 13 (46 percent) from 3-point range. The Bluejays made 16 of their 19 free throw attempts (84 percent).
D'Ante Foster led the Bluejays with 19 points while Zack Boyd scored 13 and Nick Sanford added 10.
Elmhurst had a 29-27 rebound lead and committed 13 turnovers to 11 for IWU.
The Titans are at home to meet Millikin at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday (Jan. 24). The Big Blue has won once in 17 games and is 0-6 in the CCIW.
