IWU Volleyball Garners First CCIW Win, 3-0, vs. Augustana

Box Score BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan volleyball team won its first conference match of the 2011 season in convincing fashion in three sets over Augustana at the Shirk Center on Sept. 27.

The Titans, who improved to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, won by scores of 25-18, 25-13, 25-23. Augustana slipped to 7-9 overall and 1-2 in the league.

"Tonight the team came out with energy and executed our game plan," said IWU head coach Kim Nelson-Brown. "Even when things became close in set three, we stayed composed and aggressive. This was a much needed win for our team."

Junior Alex Hill led the Tttans with 10 kills while sophomore Stephanie Buhrow had eight and freshmen Kinzie Schweigert and Maddie Greybar each added six kills.
Sophomore Sarah Blum had 14 of the team's 38 defensive digs and sophomore Erin Wachtel had 29 set assists. Buhrow led Illinois Wesleyan wth four blocks.

The Titans took set one by a 25-18 score. After trailing 16-14, IWU scored eight straight points to open up a 22-16 lead, claiming the lead to stay.

Set two was 25-13 for the Titans as they led from the start at 6-2 and scored five consecutive points when it was 9-5 to jump to a 14-5 advantage.

The third set was tied at 20, 21, 22 and 23 before the Titans scored the final two points.
IWU led early, 9-2, before Augustana went on a late run to erase a 19-16 deficit to work into a 20-20 tie.

IWU plays next on Friday at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. against Robert Morris-Peoria and No. 23-ranked Wisconsin-Platteville, respectively.
On Saturday at 10 a.m. IWU hosts Culver Stockton and plays No. 22-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
