Illinois Wesleyan Wins Own Men's Soccer Tourney

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Three second half goals and shutout goalkeeping by junior Tim Hegwood gave the Illinois Wesleyan men's soccer team a 3-0 win over Central College on Sunday, Sept. 11, and the championship of IWU's own "Clash of the Titans" tournament.

The game was scoreless until the 63rd minute when, at 62:46,  Illinois Wesleyan (now 3-1) scored on an own goal when a free kick by junior Danny Kenny was deflected in by a Central defender.

Less than four minutes later, at 66:35, the Titans made it 2-0 when junior Sam Peniak found the right side of the goal after a crossing pass fron sophomore Adam Flaugher.

Freshman Nate Bell gave the Titans a three-goal lead at 83:34 with an assist to sophomore Angelo Catalano.

The Dutch outshot the Titans, 12-8, but IWU had four shots on goal compared to three for Central.

Hegwood, who made three saves, also had a shutout against Webster on Saturday.

Illinois Wesleyan's next action will be at home against Wisconsin-Whitewater at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15.
