MOLINE, Ill.- The IWU baseball team smacked 30 hits and scored 24 runs but could only come out with one victory in a doubleheader at Augustana, winning 18-13 in game one and falling 9-6 in game two on April 5.
In game one, the Titans were down 8-4 after three innings and 12-8 after five but came back to tie the game at 13 at the end of nine before scoring five in the top of the tenth.
Sophomore
Anthony Lopez got things started in the extra frame with a one-out single to right center, which was followed by a sacrifice bunt by sophomore
Zach Scott. The two-out rally ensued with doubles by senior
Ryan Hopp and junior
Mark McDermott followed by singles from senior
Jeff Grodecki, sophomore
Kevin Callahan (shown), freshman
Bobby Czarnowski, and sophomore
A.J. Nathan.
IWU pounded out 22 hits and were led by Callahan who went 5-for-5 with a double, a home run, six RBIs, and two walks. Six Titans had two or more hits including Czarnowksi, Nathan and Hopp each with three.
Junior Pay Hayn got the win in relief throwing 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out three. Hayn improved to 1-1 on the year.
In game two, IWU fell behind early once again until Czarnowski hit a two-run homer in the fifth to tie the game at five.
The Titans would take the lead the next inning when Grodecki was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded but that was the last run IWU would score.
Augustana took the lead for good by scoring four runs in the seventh off of four consecutive hits, an IWU error and a sacrifice fly given up by losing pitcher freshman
Ryan Hamm.
Hamm fell to 0-1 on the season as the Titans are now 12-5 overall and 4-1 in the CCIW.
Illinois Wesleyan continues CCIW play Friday, April 9 with a single game against Wheaton College at 6 p.m. at Jack Horenberger Field.
