BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Senior third baseman Jeff Grodecki had three hits and senior Jason Pankau became the school's all-time strikeout leader, but the Illinois Wesleyan baseball team lost a 4-3 verdict to Elmhurst on Friday, April 29 at Horenberger Field.

The Titans are now 21-11 overall and slipped to 11-5 in the CCIW while the Bluejays are 13-16 this season and 3-12 in the league. The teams will play a doubleheader at Elmhurst on Saturday, April 30, at 1 p.m.

Pankau (5-2) pitched 7 2/3 innings and allowed eight hits and four runs, striking out eight and boosting his career total to 238. The old record of 235 was held by righthander Brett  Robinson, who played from 1984 to 1987.

IWU did all its scoring in the first two frames. Senior centerfielder Ryan Hopp led off the first with a double to left center, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Grodecki single to center.

In the second, freshman designated hitter Bobby Czarnowski was hit by a pitch, sophomore catcher A.J. Nathan reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Freshman second baseman Johnathan Erickson did successfully sacrifice the runners to second and third before junior rightfielder Kevin Sullivan was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Sophomore shortstop Zach Scott singled home Czarnowski before Hopp reached on an error on pitcher Brian Marquis to allow Nathan to score an unearned run.

Marquis (3-4) pitched a complete game seven-hitter and fanned two while being aided by three double plays.
