Box Score

MONMOUTH, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan Titans scored five runs in the eighth inning to tie the game at 7-7, but Monmouth scored three runs in its half of the inning to claim a 10-7 win on Wednesday, April 20.

No. 25-ranked Illinois Wesleyan is now 17-9 overall while the Scots improved to 16-7.

The Titans trailed 5-2 going to the eighth when senior centerfielder Ryan Hopp led off with a walk and junior leftfielder Mark McDermott also walked. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before senior third baseman Jeff Grodecki walked. Hot-hitting sophomore first baseman Kevin Callahan greeted new Monmouth pitcher with a grand slam home run to close the score to 7-6.

After a fly out, sophomore catcher A.J. Nathan and freshman second baseman Jonathan Erickson singled. After an infield popout, sophomore shortstop Zach Scott singled home Nathan to tie the score at 7-7.

Freshman Tyler Scott (0-1) was the victim of a fielding error and was the hard-luck losing pitcher as he pitched one inning, allowed no hits and struck out two. A baserunner he allowed to reach came around to score on a two-run double by Donnan.
Junior Eric McCullough was the starter and went 4 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and five runs (all earned) while walking two and striking out three.

The Titans open a three-game series with No. 15-ranked Carthage at Jack Horenberger Field with a single game on Friday at 6 p.m. and a Noon doubleheader on Saturday.
