BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Senior
Jason Pankau pitched a seven-inning two-hitter in an Illinois Wesleyan 10-0 win over Millikin and
Joe Sweeney allowed six hits in an 11-1 complete game victory on April 2 as the Titans' opened the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin schedule with two wins.
The Titans improved to 10-4 overall and 2-0 in the CCIW and Millikin slipped to 4-12 and 0-2.
In game one, Pankau improved to 2-1 by throwing a seven inning shutout as the game was shortened by the mercy rule. He needed only 67 pitches to complete the game in which he struck out seven and walked none.
IWU got on the board with five runs in the fourth on just three hits. Senior
Jeff Grodecki led off with a double and came around to score on a fielder's choice ground ball from sophomore catcher AJ Nathan, senior
Kevin Sullivan and sophomore
Anthony Lopez walked with the bases loaded,
Zach Scott plated a run with a sacrifice fly to center field and senior
Ryan Hopp scored Sullivan with a single.
Ryan Hopp homered in the sixth and Nathan was the third Titan to walk with the bases loaded to give IWU their tenth run.
In the nightcap, junior
Joe Sweeney threw seven innings, allowed six hits, and struck out six while allowing one earned run. Junior
Pat Hayn worked a perfect eighth inning.
Five Titan hitters had an extra-base hit and four had two hits.
Sullivan provided the big blow with a three RBI triple off the 365-foot sign on the left centerfield wall.
In the eighth, sophomore
Kevin Callahan watched his home run sail over the right field wall to end the game by the mercy rule.
The Titans will play at Millikin on Sunday, April 3.
